Estate Planning Pyramid

The estate planning pyramid reminds us that an estate plan has to be built from the bottom up on a firm foundation. That foundation begins with the most important person in the world to you -- YOU! If you do not plan for your own needs, then you will not be able to help those you love. The Family is the second tier of the pyramid. The next two tiers are the protection of what wealth you already have followed by the addition of more wealth. Estate taxes are at the tip of the pyramid to remind us that the tail should not wag the dog. Their are well recognized ways of reducing estate taxes. Estate taxes need not be the primary focus of an estate plan. If estate taxes were eliminated tomorrow, there would still be many important reasons for planning your estate -- disability planning, guardianship avoidance, remarriage protection, probate avoidance, business succession, asset protection for heirs, caring for minor children, adult children with problems, and many more. The truth is most people do not have a taxable estate, but they still need estate planning.

Estate Planning

Many people put off doing any estate planning because they associate it with their own demise, but estate planning is not just about planning for the distribution of your assets after you are gone. Proper estate planning also takes into account how you will be taken care of while you are still living if you become disabled. It also considers how to protect your assets for your own use and your hopes, dreams, and desires for your loved ones whether family, friends, or charities. Your estate plan will be built on a firm foundation by first considering your needs, then the needs of your family, ways to protect your estate, ways to grow your estate, and, finally, ways to minimize estate taxes. See, The Estate Planning Pyramid. Mr. Hackney will discuss the unique aspects of your family and your finances. Once all the facts are known, he can work with you to help you to give your property to whom you want, the way you want, when you want at the lowest over-all cost to you and those you love. Mr. Hackney will also work with your other financial advisors to accomplish these goals.

The job does not end with delivery of the trust. The firm will work closely with you to properly fund your trust and update it on a regular basis. A flat fee will be quoted for the work to be performed before moving forward with the design and drafting of your estate plan.
